Connecticut Data Collaborative

The Connecticut Data Collaborative (CtDC) is a collaborative public-private effort to improve the quality of and access to policy-related data in the state. The Collaborative is addressing the growing demand for high quality, objective, accessible data to inform and drive public policy and planning at the community, regional, and state level across several policy areas. It is connecting with and involving the leaders of many key state initiatives and offers a practical, short-term vehicle for accomplishing the aims of these initiatives.

The Collaborative is creating a highly user-friendly, web-based utility (www.CTData.org) where all stakeholders can post and download important data that can support the policy development process.

The Connecticut Data Collaborative is facilitated by the . The Connecticut Data Collaborative is a project of the New Connecticut Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization affiliated with the Connecticut Economic Resource Center. The Collaborative, established in 2009, has received major funding for its work from the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority. Seed funding has been provided by the Connecticut Early Childhood Education Cabinet, the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, and the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County. Funding for the CTData.org customized data portals has also been received from the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the Connecticut Office of Rural Health, the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County, the Bridgeport Department of Health, and the Connecticut Health Foundation.

Goals

  • Advocacy - Advocating for the public availability of all state data to inform public debate and drive planning, policy, budgeting and decision-making in state government.
  • Standards - Promoting and modeling use of data standards around privacy, interoperability, data definitions and quality.
  • Access - Meeting demands for public access to data through the Collaborative’s data portal, CTData.org, and the associated Connecticut Nonprofit Strategy Platform.
  • Building Capacity - Creating opportunities for Collaborative and peer support in data development and use both online and in person.

Connecticut's Representative in the Open Indicators Consortium

The Connecticut Data Collaborative is a founding member of the national Open Indicators Consortium, which is developing a state-of-the-art data visualization software, Weave, with the Institute for Visualization and Perception Research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Weave BETA 1.0 was released as open source software in June 2011.

Making Data More Accessible - the OIC Knight Foundation Project: With financial support from the Knight Foundation, the Consortium is partnering with Community Foundations in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the development of citizen-friendly data visualizations to engage active residents in using data to impact policy.
