CARE: Community Alliance for Research and Engagement at Yale University
About CARE
The City of New Haven is full of rich historical and cultural traditions. But today our community is at elevated risk for chronic disease problems typical of urban centers, such as obesity, asthma, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Poverty, social inequity and youth violence compound the exposure of vulnerable neighborhoods to health risks. CARE was established in 2007 to bring a unique focus to these challenges through community action research – for the first time, bridging scientists at Yale and the New Haven community for a sharper understanding of the causes, consequences, and solutions to chronic health risk in our local neighborhoods.

Health Asset Maps of New Haven
In Summer 2009, teams of Youth@Work employees criss-crossed the city, documenting issues like poorly-lit parks and unsafe traffic conditions. CARE plans to update these asset maps in 2013.
Health Survey of New Haven Residents
Approximately 1,400 adults in the city’s Dixwell, Dwight / West River, Fair Haven, Hill, Newhallville and West Rock neighborhoods were interviewed about their health and the health of their community, including access to health care, diet, exercise, and tobacco use as well as the neighborhood environment.
This information will be combined with data from already completed health maps of the same six neighborhoods and used to develop policy proposals and health programs to curb obesity, smoking, diabetes and other factors that contribute to the onset of chronic disease. New Haven, like other urban centers, disproportionately bears the burden of chronic disease. Such diseases account for 70 percent of all illness and death in the United States and 75 percent of health care costs—yet they are totally preventable.
Some of the data collected from the health survey is posted here, including the summaries of the 6 neighborhoods that participated (see the table of resources on the sidebar to download these), and other public reports. The full set of results is available through CARE.
In collaboration with the Hospitals, City of New Haven, New Haven Public Schools, DataHaven and other community partners, CARE will be repeating these health surveys in the fall of 2012.
Survey of New Haven Public School 5th and 6th Graders
In partnership with the New Haven Public Schools, CARE helped facilitate a survey of 5th and 6th grade students in 12 randomly selected schools. A summary of the data can be found here: File:NewHaven CARE SchoolDataSummary 2010.pdf

CARE and the New Haven Public Schools are continuing to collect a significant amount of student-level health data each year, and will publish additional summaries going forward.
